A Complete American Sign Language Program for Middle & High School Students

Whether your student is completely new to American Sign Language or looking to continue their language studies, Homeschool ASL provides a structured pathway for learning ASL from the ground up.

Designed specifically for homeschool students, our self-paced courses combine engaging video instruction, projects, quizzes, personalized teacher feedback, and live support opportunities throughout the year. Students develop both receptive and expressive communication skills while gaining a deeper understanding of Deaf culture and the ASL community.

Students may begin with ASL 1 at any point during middle or high school. No prior sign language experience is required.

Flexible Learning Pathways

For most homeschool families, ASL 1 and ASL 2 provide a complete two-year foreign language sequence that may be used toward high school language requirements and transcript credits.

Students who develop a passion for ASL and wish to continue their studies may choose to enroll in ASL 3, an optional advanced course designed to further strengthen communication skills, expand vocabulary, and deepen cultural understanding.

Like all Homeschool ASL courses, Elementary ASL is completely self-paced. Families can work through lessons on a schedule that fits their homeschool routine, allowing students to revisit material as often as needed.

There are no live class times to attend, making it easy to fit ASL into even the busiest homeschool schedule.

ASL 1
Build a Strong Foundation

ASL 1 introduces students to the fundamentals of American Sign Language. Students learn essential vocabulary, fingerspelling, basic grammar, sentence structure, and everyday communication skills while developing confidence in both expressive and receptive signing.

Topics include:
• Greetings and introductions
• Numbers and fingerspelling
• Family and relationships
• School and daily activities
• Food, animals, and common vocabulary
• Basic sentence structure
• Deaf culture foundations

No prior ASL experience required.
ASL 2
Expand Communication Skills

ASL 2 builds upon the foundation established in ASL 1, helping students move beyond basic vocabulary and into more natural communication. Students strengthen receptive skills, improve conversational ability, and continue developing fluency through increasingly complex language structures.

Topics include:
• Expanded vocabulary
• Conversational communication
• Descriptive signing
• Classifiers
• Role shifting
• Increased receptive practice
• Deaf culture exploration

Prerequisite: ASL 1 or equivalent experience.
ASL 3
Continue Your ASL Journey

ASL 3 is an optional advanced course for students who wish to continue beyond the traditional two-year sequence. Students further develop expressive and receptive skills while exploring more advanced vocabulary, communication concepts, and cultural topics.

Topics include:
• Advanced vocabulary
• Professional and academic signs
• Specialized topic areas
• Advanced receptive practice
• Complex communication concepts
• Contemporary Deaf culture topics

Prerequisite: ASL 2 or equivalent experience.

Learn at Your Own Pace

All Homeschool ASL courses are fully self-paced, allowing students to progress through lessons on a schedule that works for their family. Students may revisit lessons as often as needed while receiving support and feedback throughout the course.

Whether a student completes a course in a semester or spreads it throughout the school year, the flexibility of online learning allows families to adapt the course to their unique homeschool schedule.
